Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2020 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase I struggle with the word amenities sometimes too. This movie addresses pen names of authors and the transparency of the author. The movie raises some interesting questions about the importance of knowing the author and who that are in real life in relation to their work(s). Does an author reveal themselves or stay hidden under a pen name to protect or guise oneself? Is a work made more or less good if the author is anonymous, or if it is revealed the author(s) themselves are not reliable or have done wrong in real life? Does this snowball to people attacking someone’s reputation (and potentially physical self) to kill the person’s name/self (this is relevant outside the world of writing/authorship as well)? The woman (Avery Malone) enters this “game” by her favorite author (Caleb Conrad) to document her response and feelings of true fear by putting her through physical and psychological experiments trying to conjure fear within her. It kind of comes across that she it trying to use the “horror game” situation a bit as therapy/to provide an opportunity for self-growth and potentially overcome/understand the fear associated with her missing sister, which the man manipulates by hurting women/the image of women to get material for a new book (supposedly, we are not given concrete evidence the man is who he claims he is). I suppose another way of interpreting this movie would be as an experienced author manipulating and taking advantage of a young aspiring writer with the potential to outshine him, so the “game” is a form of competition to him in an attempt at retaining control. I still don’t understand why someone gets upset about being predictable. An entertaining watch throughout. Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2020 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase Ok, I rented this for my Birthday since I was staying in and the plot sounded amazing. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good, it wasn't horrible but I didn't care for it. The plot moved slowly and it was all over the place. I didn't like any of the characters and I still had questions about stuff that was mentioned but then never answered. It had some potential but they just didn't get there for me. Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2020 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase It seemed like the idea of the movie gave it much potential. but the character development was terrible. Gave you little to go on so that you are guessing throughout the movie what it going on and why. Leaves you with the feeling like you left a movie 5 or 6 times and missed important scenes. Not just me. Watched this movie with 3 friends and we all agreed that if we could give this a zero star we would. Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2020 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase You ever see that movie Oculus? It's kinda like that. Where you have no idea what's real or not. Even at the end. It becomes so convoluted that in the end, nothing really matters. It could all be fiction. It could all be real. It could all be a dream. Who knows? But, I think, it's weak writing. Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2020 Format: Prime Video Is this really a 4 star? Maybe not but I thought it was still entertaining. A young aspiring writer takes a job as a assistant to a writer in a remote location and things begin to get surreal and increasingly sinister. There has been a recent rise in the use of the writing guise as a vessel for characters, Antonio Banderas Black Butterfly comes to mind. I thought the psychological element was pretty good. There were a couple strings that while not really part of the main story, did raise my eyebrows. For example, she talks about her sister who is missing and its made to seem like this is really important. Another example is during the lie detector test she tells him she has killed someone. So just a few "huh? " moments. I was definitely entertained by this.
